January is here, which means you’re probably going to bed earlier, fighting those tired feelings, and wondering if you really have to ever leave your house again!

Reduced sun exposure and higher energy usage are usually the culprits when it comes to winter tiredness. Biologically, we are meant to slow down in the winter! Rest is important, and there is no better time like the present. Lean into your desire to stay in and snuggle up while you read this blog!

Winter is for Recovering Your Nervous System

Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas… it’s no surprise that your nervous system needs a little R & R after a busy couple of months!

When people think of resting, they often don’t think of intentional rest for their nervous system. Rest for the nervous system is critical. The nervous system is the body’s information super highway and controls so much of what you think and how you feel. It affects the way you walk, talk, and even react to different situations.

For example, when you’re stressed out and exhausted, your nervous system turns on high alert, leaving less room to send energy to other parts of your body. High stress, frequent exhaustion, and burnout can lead to a weakened immune system, which increases the chance of sickness.

Here are some tips for giving your nervous system some TLC this winter:

  • Get regular chiropractic adjustments. Our Springfield, MO chiropractic clinic can help to realign your spine and remove nerve interference, which improves your nervous system function.
  • Practice breathing and relaxation techniques. Yoga, meditation, and deep breathing are all great ways to relax your mind and body.
  • Go outside (even if it’s just for a minute!). It may be frozen outside, but a breath of fresh air never hurt anyone! Step outside and take a deep breath, even if it’s just for a moment.
  • Get enough sleep. The importance of sleep cannot be overstated 👏🏻 Most adults need around 7-8 hours of sleep per night for proper brain function.
  • Get your nutrients in. When you spend the majority of the time indoors during the winter, you are missing important vitamins and nutrients! You can supplement these with high-quality vitamins and nutrient-rich food.

Winter is the time for Staying in with Family

Did someone say snow day?! Winter is the time to reconnect and recharge with the ones you love most. Studies show that feelings of love can decrease stress response, lower blood pressure, and relax your sympathetic nervous system.

Being together during the holidays doesn’t mean you spend much time connecting. With busy schedules, family parties, and lots of excitement, your nervous system can take a hit! Take advantage of this slow season by making intentional time for the ones you love most. It’s good for your soul and your nervous system!

Here are some ideas for spending quality time with your family this winter:

  • Have a family game night
  • Cuddle up and watch a movie together
  • Take turns reading books
  • Go for a walk in the snow
  • Bake cookies or make simmer pots
  • Have a bonfire or heat up some hot chocolate

Winter is for Letting Yourself Rest

We just left the go-go-go season, and now, it’s time to let it go and let GOD! This winter, I want you to practice giving yourself grace and time to rest. It is so important to slow down and take regular breaks. 1 Kings 5:4 says “But now the Lord my God has given me rest on every side; there is neither adversary nor misfortune.”

When the Lord is telling you to rest, it’s time to rest!

Here are some additional ways you can stay mentally well this winter:

  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you’re struggling to cope with stress or exhaustion, don’t hesitate to reach out to a friend, family member, or healthcare professional.
  • It’s okay to say no. You don’t have to feel obligated to do everything that everyone asks of you. It’s important to set boundaries and make time for yourself.
  • Focus on the positive. Take some time each day to appreciate the good things in your life. Gratitude can help to boost your mood and improve your overall well-being.

And if you’re looking for a little extra help in recovering your nervous system, staying connected with your family, and giving yourself grace this winter, you can schedule an appointment with your local family chiropractor (that’s me!). I’m here to help you create a personalized plan to support your overall health and well-being!
